Shawn Philips (born February 3, 1943, Fort Worth, Texas, USA) is a folk-rock musician, primarily influential in the 1960s and 1970s.
Phillips has recorded twenty albums and worked with musicians including Donovan, Paul Buckmaster, J. Peter Robinson, Eric Clapton, Steve Winwood, Bernie Taupin and many others. The Texas-born singer/songwriter was described as "The best kept secret in the music business" by the late rock impresario Bill Graham.

Strange Hobby album by Arjen Lucassen

Strange Hobby is an uncredited cover album by Arjen Lucassen, released in 1996. The album and the booklet contains no information about Lucassen and don't explain who was responsible for the recordings, to make the album even more "strange".
The album features covers of songs that have influenced Lucassen's musical development, mainly from the 1960s. As he did in his solo album Pools of Sorrow, Waves of Joy, Lucassen makes all the vocals and all the instruments (except drums and synthesizer), and arranged all the songs himself.

Sam Gopal

Sam Gopal (also called Sam Gopal's Dream) is an underground British Psychedelic rock band.
The band is named after its founder, Sam Gopal, born in Malaysia. From the age of seven, he played tabla, a northern Indian percussion that replaced drums in the band.
On 28 April 1967, the band performed at The 14 Hour Technicolor Dream, a UK Underground event organised by the International Times at Alexandra Palace. The line-up was Sam Gopal on Tabla,Mick Hutchinson on guitar, and Peter Sears on bass guitar and organ. Other performing bands included Pink Floyd, The Pretty Things, Savoy Brown, The Crazy World of Arthur Brown, Soft Machine and The Move.  Sam Gopal Dream played at the UFO Club. The Electric Garden in Covent Garden (later to become Middle Earth), The Roundhouse and Happening 44. They later played the Christmas on Earth Show at Olympia in London with Traffic, Jimi Hendrix and Pink Floyd. Jimi Hendrix later sat in with the original Sam Gopal Dream at London's Speakeasy Club.

After the original band broke up in 1968, Sam formed a new line-up which included vocalist Lemmy. He was a singer-guitarist with Sam Gopal, before becoming the bassist of Hawkwind and, in 1975, the founder, singer and bassist of Motorhead.
Sam Gopal's album Escalator was recorded in 1968 and released in 1969.

Gong

Gong
Opgericht eind jaren 60 van de 20e eeuw. Er is geen definitieve bezetting te geven van deze band, het was meer een muzikantencollectief. Gong is genoemd naar het lievelingsmuziekinstrument gong van Daevid Allen.
Hetzelfde geldt voor de muziekstijl, deze verschoof in de loop van de jaren van psychedelische rock, spacerock, Canterbury naar jazzrock en weer terug. De muziek van Gong viel met name op door haar kakofonische karakter, een volstrekt onnavolgbare collage van eenvoudige melodietjes, met ingewikkelde jazzritmes. De keyboards moesten een ruimtesfeer scheppen waarin de psychedelische muziek met haar karikaturale teksten een plek kreeg. Essentieel voor de muziek van Gong was het ontstaan: de muziek moest “groeien”, in het samenwerken van de groep. Er waren geen van tevoren samengesteld composities, maar ieder droeg zijn deel bij. De Gong mythologie zoals deze neergezet is met de Radio Gnome trilogie bleef ook terugkomen in het solowerk van Allen, en in het werk van bands waarin hij speelde zoals Euterpe en Planet Gong.

Begin

Als algemeen begin van de band wordt beschouwd het tijdstip waarop Daevid Allen Soft Machine moet verlaten. Soft Machine bestaat dan uit Daevid Allen, Kevin Ayers en Robert Wyatt. Allen mag na een tournee in Frankrijk, Engeland niet meer in. Hij vestigt zich in Parijs en probeert met musiceren geld te verdienen. Daardoor komt hij in aanraking met zielsverwanten die in Frankrijk verblijven of wonen. Als eersten dienen zich aan: Gilli Smyth (dichteres en hoogleraar aan de Sorbonne), Didier Malherbe (sax), Ziska Baun en Loren Standlee (fluit). Ze treden op in Le Vieille Grille in Parijs. Ze begeleiden soms ook, b.v. Don Cherry en zelfs Yoko Ono.
Ook de Franse politie zit nu achter Allen aan aangezien hij zich heeft gemengd in de studentenopstand van 1968 in Parijs; de politie ziet in hem een opruier en iemand met te revolutionaire ideeën. Allen en Smyth zijn vastgelegd tijdens demonstraties en worden beschuldigd van "culturele agitatie". Allen en Smyth vluchten daarop naar Majorca, Spanje . Allen, Smyth en Malherbe blijven echter optreden en worden ontdekt door Jerome Laperrousaz. Hij heeft muziek nodig voor zijn documentairefilm Continental Circus en geeft deze combinatie een inkomen om de muziek op te nemen. Ook Jean Karokos (baas van het obscure BYG-label) stopt geld in de band. Gong is nu een feit. De start is een 9-mans band met Allen, Smyth, Malherbe, Tasmin Smyth, Rachid Houari, Earl Freeman, Burton Green, Barre Phillips en Christian Tritsch. Musici komen en gaan. Naast Gong is Allen nog bezig met een solocarrière; hij neemt Banana Moon op.

Gong I

De eerste wat stabiele bezetting dient zich aan als het album Camembert Electrique wordt opgenomen. Allen, Smyth, Malherbe, Tritsch en Pip Pyle (later Laurie Allen) nemen het album op in een tijd dat Kevin Ayers soms ook deel uit maakt van de band. In 1972 stapt Allen plotseling uit de band; hij wil serieuzere muziek maken en de groep valt uiteen. De leden gaan ieder hun weg.

* Camembert Electrique; deze krijgt de prijs van een single (49 pence) om de verkoop te stimuleren; het helpt niet echt;
* Camembert Eclectique.

Gong II
Gong, Hyde Park, London, 1974

Allen kan het toch niet laten als het net opgerichte platenlabel Virgin hem benadert om Gong weer op te starten. Als gitarist komt Steve Hillage de groep versterken. Gong staat dan nog onder contract bij Byg Records, maar de platenfirma en zijn directeur zijn nergens te vinden. Uiteindelijk zet Virgin door en ontstaat een band met Allen, Smyth, Hillage, Tim Blake (toetsen), Francis Moze (basgitaar). Door het toetreden van Hillage komt er meer structuur in de muziek. De totale anarchie van Allen en Smyth verdwijnt wat naar de achtergrond. Maar ook gedurende deze tijd is het een komen en gaan van musici. Tim Blake zit dan weer wel, dan weer niet in de band. Na verloop van tijd stapt Moze uit de band en stapt Mike Howlett in. Er komt opnieuw een breuk; Allen en Smyth stappen op. In deze tijd komt men met Planet Gong, een ideale wereld. De musici krijgen artiestennamen. In de drie komende albums werd de Gong mythologie uitgewerkt, een absurde serie verhalen rond de held Zero the Hero, een "pot-head Pixie", een vertegenwoordiger van een buitenaardse beschaving die in theekopjes vloog.

Paragong

Zonder Allen en Smyth toert een versie door Europa, die zich Paragong noemt. Musici zijn Blake, Hillage, Howlett, Malherbe en Pierre Moerlen. Ze spelen allerlei muziek, waaronder muziek van Kevin Ayers. Hillage en Moerlen profileren zich steeds meer als leiders van de band. Miquette Giraudy, de vriendin van Hillage treedt ook toe tot de band.

Gong III

Allen en Smyth verzoenen zich weer met de andere leden en in die combinatie komen twee albums uit. Verschillen van mening over alles en nog wat blijven. Allen probeert de drugs totaal af te zweren, terwijl andere (jongere) leden er stevig op los experimenteren. Tijdens een optreden in Cheltenham wordt Allen van het podium geweerd en hij vindt het dan genoeg. Juist dan pikt de Franse Omroep de muziek op van Continental Circus en wordt de groep populair.

Tot nu toe bestaat de muziek voornamelijk uit psychedelische muziek met een vleugje spacerock.

Laurie Allen wordt opgepakt wegens drugsbezit en Pierre Moerlen komt in de band; Hij stapt weer op en wordt tijdelijk vervangen door Bill Bruford; echter na korte tijd komt Moerlen weer terug.

Gong IV

Nu (1975) de band totaal op zijn gat ligt, treden Moerlen en Hillage naar voren als degenen die de band willen voortzetten en leiden. Als begin van deze serie kan gezien worden een tournee eind 1975 in Engeland, met in het voorprogramma ook zo’n onduidelijke band: Clearlight. Men begint in 1976 met de opnamen van Shamal, maar speelt vooraf tijdens die tournee de nummers alvast door. Tijdens de tournee worden ook nummers gespeeld van de eerste soloplaat van Hillage: Fish Rising. Als producer voor Shamal wordt Nick Mason van Pink Floyd aangetrokken; die heeft dan net contact binnen de jazzrockwereld, onder anderen met Carla Bley. De muziek gaat nu richting jazzrock en Canterbury. Hillage verlaat de groep als Shamal zijn definitieve vorm krijgt en Moerlen krijgt het nu helemaal voor het zeggen. Deze versie van Gong kan gezien worden als een voorloper van Pierre Moerlen's Gong.

Gong na de jaren zeventig

Hoe nu verder? Smyth vormde haar eigen band: Mother Gong, de naam wordt afgeleid van de elpee Mother die Smyth gemaakt had. Smyth en Allen hadden hun relatie verbroken, maar in de muziek werd nog wel samengewerkt, Allen heeft geholpen met de opzet van het album. Men maakt muziek met ex-leden van Hawkwind, Harry Williamson en Dave Anderson. Allen zelf gaat op de solotoer, en vormt later Planet Gong, waarmee hij aansloot bij de nieuwe golf in de muziek, de new wave. Wanneer Allen in 1978 naar New York vertrekt, houdt Planet Gong op te bestaan, in New York wordt nog wel een nieuwe telg geboren, New York Gong. Begin jaren 80 trekt Allen zich voor een tijdje terug in zijn vaderland, pas in 1988 komt hij weer naar Europa. Met Malherbe zet hij Gong Maison op, een nieuwe telg waarin de invloeden van de house muziek herkenbaar zijn. In 1992 zetten Allen en Malherbe Gong opnieuw op, in eerste instantie onder de naam Gong Maison. Na het toetreden van de drummer van het eerste uur, Pip Pyle, werd de groep omgedoopt en kreeg de originele naam terug: Gong. In deze formatie werd een album uitgebracht met als titel Shapeshifter. Het album kreeg vervolgens de ondertitel Radio Gnome deel 4. In 2000 volgde dan een 5e deel: Zero to Infinity, met in de line-up weer Smyth en basgitarist Mike Howlett.

2009
Gong leidde al jaren een sluimerend bestaan, men moest het hebben van zogenaamde Gong-dagen, waar dan diverse leden van de band ad hoc bij elkaar kwamen. In 2009 verscheen echter uit het niets het album 2032. De titel heeft betrekking op de ontdekking van de planeet  Gong in 2032, aldus het vervolgverhaal van Daevid Allen binnen de grote Gong-familie. In het begin van de loopbaan van de band verscheen een aantal albums die over het zelfde onderwerp ging zoals Flying Teapot en Angel's Egg en You. De hoofdpersoon in die tijd Zero the Hero is ook terug, het hoesontwerp (van Allen) is een 0 met ornamenten.
De popmuziek heeft zich in die bijna veertig jaar, Flying Teapot verscheen in  1973, op allerlei gebied ontwikkeld. Dat is echter niet af te horen aan dit album; het is uitgevoerd in de toenmalige stijl van de band. Die stijl is anno 2010 net zo makkelijk/moeilijk te omschrijven als toen. De basis werd gelegd met progressieve rock, psychedelische rock en spacerock, maar Gong gaf daar een bijzondere draai aan. Zeer herkenbaar is het gitaargeluid van Hillage; het is alsof de tijd van zijn soloalbums is teruggehaald. Opnamen vonden plaats in de A-Wavestudio te Londen; andere in de 2 kHz Studio aldaar. Allen nam nog wat zaken op in Australie.

1965
Bruce joins his first band, the Castiles, a five-piece rock band with Beatles and Rolling Stones influences. The band is mostly a cover band and performs at local malls and "battles of the bands"

1968
The Castiles break up when most of the members begin to find other interests in life. Bruce, however, has his mind set on a musical career and forms a new band called Earth.

1969
Bruce forms a new band, Child, which quickly changes its name to Steel Mill when it turns out there is another band called Child. Steel Mill is Springsteen's most famous early band. Their style is characterized by long bluesy instrumental passages and Springsteen's lyrical experiments. The lineup changes a couple of times, but among the members are Danny Federici, Steve Van Zandt, Robbin Thompson, and Vini Lopez.

1971
At the height of their popularity (Steel Mill's crowds were sometimes counted in the thousands for their outdoor gigs) Bruce breaks up the band after a final gig at the Upstage Club in Asbury Park.
Bruce spends the rest of 1971 experimenting with new band formations known under such names as the Bruce Springsteen Jam, Dr. Zoom and the Sonic Boom, and finally the Bruce Springsteen Band.

The Beatles in India

In 1968 maakten The Beatles een meditatiereis naar Rishikesh in het noorden van India.

Ze waren al beroemd om hun platen waarin ze rock and roll een nieuwe vorm gaven – en waarschijnlijk de wereld ook – maar John, Paul, George en Ringo zochten constant naar nieuwe muzikale uitdagingen. Een toevallige ontmoeting tussen George Harrison en een aantal Indiase muzikanten op de set van de Beatles film ‘Help!’ in 1965 was voor George de introductie van de Indiase muziekcultuur.

Hij kocht zelfs een sitar en speelde daarop op het nummer ‘Norwegian Wood’ uit 1965 – het eerste popliedje ooit met een Indiaas instrument.

Drie jaar later, in februari 1968, reisden George en de andere Beatles naar India na een uitnodiging van de Indiase meditatiegoeroe Maharishi Mahesh Yogi om zijn verblijf in het noorden van het land te bezoeken. Daarop volgden twee maanden waarin The Beatles blijkbaar rust in zichzelf vonden – voordat ruzies in de groep de overhand namen toen de Fab Four naar huis gingen.

Bliss (1969)

Bliss - 1969

The first edition of Bliss was a 3 piece band consisting of Brad Reed, Rusty Martin, and Tom Smith that had Performed as The Sect.. They recorded an Album in 1967 on the self titled Bliss. They disbanded and re-emerged as a 3 piece band again with Corky Allred on drums and vocal, Reed again on guitar, adding Rick Rowe on bass and vocals. Rowe had experienced success with the released single of Don't Listen to Friends with a 1965 act, The Choice, for Buena Vista Productions. Bliss soon introduced Forrest Webb on lead guitar with Reed moving to keyboards , rhythym guitar and vocals.

The groups idea was to bring Corky Allred out from the drums for lead vocal as they added Roy Holbrook to drums. This five piece band recorded a studio session in 1969 under the direction and production of Hadley Murrel. Murrel footed the production for Canyon Records and the project never moved beyond tape until re-appearing on CD around 2006. Credit for material written belongs primarily to Webb and Rowe. Webb compiled Sandbox Symphony and collaborated on City Woman with Rowe. Rowe penned Reach Out and Touch You and Nothingin My Life, and co-wrote Hotche Blus with Allred and Fear of Fears with Reed.
The two versions of material for listening is the first wax LP releaesed by the Sect/Bliss edition and the CD compiled from the 1969 studio re-introduced by John Dixon.

Their sound can be described as space rock although an equal amount of weight is given to lyrics and song structures as to the intricate, echoing atmospheres that surround them. These vivid arrangements are created entirely using analog equipment and recording techniques, just as the songs themselves recall the scope of classic 1970s rock, and even soul.
